Brainspotting

Brainspotting (BSP), developed by Dr. David Grand, is an integrative therapy that combines elements from Somatic Experiencing (SE) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). This gentle, body-based approach utilises specific eye positions to help the processing of distressing memories. BSP has been found to be effective in addressing a wide range of issues, including trauma, anxiety, stress, addictions, and performance challenges. By tapping into the brain’s natural capacity for healing, BSP offers individuals an opportunity to overcome obstacles and achieve personal growth.

BSP emphasise the role of orientation through the eyes in trauma processing and utilises specific eye positions, known as “brainspots,” to help the processing of distressing memories and emotions. By focusing on the eyes and their connection to the brain’s neural pathways, BSP offer individuals an opportunity to access and process traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Often using Brainspotting music ( bilateral sounds) in therapy to help clients with emotional processing. The healing sound enters the brain directly through the auditory nerves whilst the eardrums are vibrated bilaterally. Bilateral sound alternated between left and right sides of the brain, many clients find it calming and experience deeper processing as they access the subcortical or limbic ( emotional) area of the brain. This part of the brain responds best to sensory stimulation.
